Reader Request! What to Wear with the Little Black Dress (LBD)

Image
Hello, can you help me? I am going to semi-formal academic function/dinner/wine reception, and as a college student, I live in jeans, sweaters, t-shirt, layers. I consider my look pretty down to earth with a bit of trend. I know how to dress up jeans, but I have no idea how to dress up without wearing jeans. I am kind of curvy, and young, and so I want to wear something trendy, youthful, but mature at the same time without looking frumpy or "too sexy." Can you help by suggesting a few pieces that can layer and go together well? Thank you! Hi For situations such as a semi-formal function, I would suggest the classic LBD (little black dress) and work around that with accessories. You can pretty much do anything with the LBD 1) layer a blazer over it with the sleevs rolled up slightly for that cool vibe 2) wear it with pearls for a more sophisticated look 3) layer some cool necklaces 4) wear it with a scarf 5) you can add some textured hosiery 6) pair it with some statement shoe...

It is so flat!

I know myself well enough that if I were put in a flight or fright situation, I would run like hell. My love and appreciation for flat shoes stems from this. I can walk into a shoe store and pick up every flat (the cheap vs. steep, the trendy vs. granny) and all nod in approval. But show me Burberry’s studded platforms and I shudder in fear. Show me any starlet that dons her Louboutin’s on the red carpet with pride, a tight painful smile and an overabundance of blisters on her toes hidden by concealer and I sigh in pity. I was browsing through the December issue of In Style and came across their section on Fashion Week testimonials. The celebs were discussing heels and in each mention, they just had to include how they were in pain but all was worth it in the name of fashion. Well they can suffer all they want but I refuse to succumb. I will resist until the very end. Even though, if there were anyone on this planet who needs to wear heels, it is I. With incredibly short legs, surpri...

My Shopping Trip...the results

Image
So it took about 3 and a half hours to get to Albany for my shopping excursion. I must admit I was worried at first when, 2 hours into the event, I had yet to make a single purchase. But then Forever 21 appeared on the horizon and the rest is history. Basically, my purchases can be summed up in 2 words: Ba-sics. Sweater dresses, pumps, flats and Coach. I cannot afford the bag but managed to fall in love with their perfume. All in all, the damage was not so bad. The breakdown: Nine West flats Nine West Croc Pumps Forever 21 gray sweater dress (it's like my 3rd) F21 black turtleneck dress F21 heather gray prep school blazer a la Balenciaga F21 Black card AE flats Coach Perfume Eesh...I bore myself with these blah basics..nothing too enticing but in the end, ill be able to mix with everything I own. I paraded said ideas today and felt satisfied that all purchases fit with everything else in my closet. Next on the shopping list... The Ziona! from Aldo:

The Fanny Pack

Image
If 1993 taught us anything, it was the value of a fanny pack. Seen on everyone from 4 year old girls to middle aged men accompanying their family to Disney world, the fanny pack had broken down barriers between race, age, and social status. Then there was a backlash. I believe this occurred around the same time everyone decided to hate NKOTB . The fanny packs were shunned from society, pushed far back in storage or sold in the “sale” aisle of the dollar store. Then Gucci graced us with their version of the fanny pack (we saw Sarah Jessica Parker wear it on a SATC episode and the crowd went wild). Coach also made their version, as did a few higher end Canadian retailers such as Rudsack and Roots . Finally, Aldo has decided this season to grace us with their version of the fanny pack. I stopped in my tracks when I spotted it as I was window shopping. I had fallen in love (see below). I was ready to spend a whopping $59.99 on the fanny pack and being a bargain shopper that says a lot...
