Flick Off: Stop the Global Meltdown

In light of An Inconvenient Truth, eco friendly light bulbs, and green being the new black, it is only suiting that retailers would jump on the "Save the World" bandwagon.

More and more, we are seeing an emergence in this trend to be environmentally friendly. This is not bad at all. In fact, it sure beats the shoulder pads.

One major Canadian Retailer, Roots, has joined forces with Flick Off (a campaign run by members who work for a Toronto ad agency) to promote the message that we have less than a decade to make some drastic changes, or we are all...flicked. I must admit the message is pretty in your face.
The big countdown clock on the top of the page is the icing on the "we are all at fault" cake.
In any case...

T-shirts, bracelets and even a global warming action kit (consisting of flyers, stencils and stickers) can be purchased either online or at your local Roots. Prices range from $5.95 for a bracelet to $29.95 for a pretty cool t-shirt. T-shirts are made from 100% organic cotton (sweet) and proceeds go to getting more people "Flicked On" (even sweeter).

In the end, the environment is something that should be taken seriously and not to sound too much like Mr. Al Gore (or Sheryl Crow for that matter) but it is up to all of us to change our habits because we can make a difference, if not for us, than for our children...

Have I crossed the line between poignant and cheesy yet?
Regardless, let's make an effort. I am not saying to go buy a t-shirt or anything. Just passing the message along is a good start.

And let's all go by the mantra:
"Actions Speak Louder than Words"

Stars without Makeup

So this posting will be a bit different. I was planning on showing another celebrity outfit or discussing how hot the color white is for summer. But...I came across a story from People. They have their annual Most Beautiful People (can we all go back in time to when Brad Pitt graced the cover? *sigh* )

Now I presume that to be truly beautiful (on the outside of course) you have to be a natural beauty, which is why they have this fahhbulous article. Really and Truly, all these women look stunning.
Rosario...
Rihanna...
Rashida...
Katharine...
Jessica...
Drew...

Don't they all look amazing. I am wondering if their skin is airbrushed, they look so perfect.
You know what, this makes me want to take things to the extreme.
It makes me want to wake up, take a long shower, moisturize me face ever so delicately, slap on some chapstick (clear of course) and sashay out the door (shiny t-zone, blemishes and uneven skin in tow)...
Until I see my face in the harsh of daylight and make a mad dash for my concealer and mascara.
Yeah, this "trend" is not for me...

BOOK THIS LOOK- Eva Longoria

*All black is always a sure bet, especially when you add a couple of off colored accessories such as the silver flats and the tan bag. Really and truly, it seems like you could go staright to bed in this outfit (it looks so comfortable) minus the sunglasses of course...unless you sleep with sunglasses which is just weird. Ok, I am babbling...

Enjoy!

BOOK THIS LOOK- Christina Ricci

*The fit of the jacket at Jacob is a little tight but the color and the shape are striking. With the grey, white and denim combo she has going on, you can pretty much go buckwild with the accessories (patent leather shoes, crazy oversized bangles, or even a detailed bag- just not all at once).
Enjoy!

Seriously Ray Ban Wayfarers?...Seriously?

What did we notice the most about Tom Cruise in Risky Business 24 “oh my goodness has it been that long” years ago?

Besides that fact the he was hot like fire -and yes, we all miss the normal, beautiful I dance in my briefs Tom- don’t you think he had on a cool pair of shades?
Granted these iconic sunglasses have been around since the 50's (appearing in movies and musice) Ray Bans Wayfarers , dare I say, were THE 80's sunglasses...

So Sienna, clever little trendster that she is, decided to start wearing them last fall (among others).
And then Scarlet...
Mischa...Kirsten... and Jessica Stam... soon followed accordingly. I guess that officially makes it a trend right?

I foresee that H&M will be carrying them soon, which means it will have hit mass apeal. I am just not feeling the “I raided the very back of dad's closet next to his beat up leather jacket and look what I found” look. It’s a bit too Ashley Olsen visits the set of Miami Vice for my taste. If I wanted that look, I would have just starred in Blues Brothers alongside Dan Aykroyd you know?

Nonetheless, I will once again disagree with myself. I am the one who vehemently swore I would never wear leggings last year and oh! look what we have here: I am about to buy my 2nd pair...and...and and Audrey Hepbrun did wear these sunglasses in Breakfast at Tiffany's. And if Audrey wore it, then it must be cool. We all know how the fashionistas feel about Miss Audrey and all she stood for. In the end, I guess I have yet to make up my mind on the Wayfarers...

However, if you are feeling this trend and if the sunglasses make you all warm and fuzzy inside, they are available at SunglassHut for $139.95.usd (2 of the 3 models are out of stock, which will probably make you want them more right?...admit it...) On a side note, I did see a version at Le Chateau (like what Molly is wearing here). They were plain reading glasses and last I checked, you could not get your eyes checked at Le Chateau, which pretty much means that the clear ones are starting their own trend as well. It's things like this that make me question Le Chateau and their motives...but that's a whole other posting.

Enjoy the Wayfarers!

Gap goes Design

Gap is the khaki pants of fashion, the comfortable basic that everyone has in their closet. Now they have decided to join forces with up and coming deisngers for a line. Following in the footsteps of such retail/designer love connections Victor & Rolf + H&M, Stella + Adidas or Proenza + Target, it is only normal that Gap jumps on the "designers heart retail" bandwagon.
Winners of the 2006 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund have designed pieces based on the classic white shirt. Now you too can own a Rodarte, Doo.Ri or Thakoon for a fraction of the price.

I have yet to try the garments but I did see them in stores. The merchandising is simple, clean and...uim...pretty? But to be honest, the peices themselves look a bit iffy. I know that they are running out of some styles online. In any case, here are some pics for your enjoyment. If anyone has a chance to hit up the Gap for desinger wear, let me know.

So now that all these parnerships are being done, would it not be amazing to see Micheal Kors + Costa Blanca? OOhhh, think of the pretty pretty dresses!

BOOK THIS LOOK- Drew Barrymore

*So we all see how Drew looks quite pretty and simple here right? Ok, the next time we are in front of our burgeoning closets, staring in disbelief and utter confusion, wondering why, oh why we have nothing to wear, let us all remember this picture of Drew. So simple with just a couple of accessories. I am quite sure we all own a black top (I own about 85) and we all have either a pair of white pants or- if white pants is not your thing cuz you think it is too Miami Vice- a pair of jeans. Put that together with a simple bangle and a nice purse and voila! Dahhhling, you will dazzle them all with your effortless style. Oh and don't forget the lipgloss (for a touch of lustre to the ensemble). Love. It.

BOOK THIS LOOK- Eva Mendes

*I am finally starting to see the wide leg jeans in a few stores. When Jacob has them you know it is mainstream. There are a few options for the cropped jacket above in various price points. Oh, and can that clutch BE more oversized? The scarf adds a very cute touch to the ensemble. Dare I say scarves look better on Eva than on JC Chasez. Just a thought...
I am going to go out on a limb here and make some lame references to *NSync songs. The scarf needs to go Bye Bye Bye, it needs to be Gone & It Makes Me Ill. Ugh, I have managed to annoy myself :) He does have pretty eyes though.

BOOK THIS LOOK- Tyra Banks

*This dress is so cute. I yelped when I found a similar version at The Gap in Eaton Center. The white and blue print is very mediterranean. Olives on a balcony overlooking Crete anyone?

Tyra is rocking the stacked peep toes but let's be honest, even a pair of dollar store thongs would look decent with this dress...ok maybe not Dollar Store...but the dress dresses itself. Am I making any sense? Just don't overdo it. Keep it simple and sweet and you may just be on your way to being America's Next Top Model :)

Sacré Bleu!

Remember when we were young and pink was for girls and blue was for boys? You remember that blue? It was not like a baby or a teal blue, nor was it a navy blue. This was your basic "Hi, I am a 5 year old boy look at my bedsheet" blue or "Hey, what's up I am a crayola box, let me introduce you to Blue". Many would refer to it as cobalt blue. It is being presented in stores now with the yellows and kelly greens.

It is clear that cobalt blue is very spring/summer 2007.

The color can be seen on everyone from (Parker Posey in Lucky April 2007 to Kate and Cameron in Harpers Bazaar February 2007)

Cobalt blue is also quite present within Canadian Retailers such as Bedo, Dynamite, Smart Set, Reitmans, Costa Blanca, Winners...the list goes on and on.

Now comes fun part: what to wear with the blue. May I suggest a pair of basic white pants or...you guessed it...some black leggings (as seen here). While you are at it, the bright blue will look exceptionally sharp with a lighter shade of grey, be it a dress, scarf or a skirt. Gold jewelry also looks fresh with this bright shade (check out the gold pendant on the UB top below).

So go! Spread your wings and shop (til your blue in the face) my dearest blog reader/ fashion extraordinaire.

Blue is no longer just for boys...or their bedsheets for that matter...
